I had the idea to open a new thread to discuss and discover new games...
New for the player... Not new in the meaning of the releasedate.
I always wanted to be a hacker

As a small boy I learned a little programming and wanted to do all the stuff I've read in books and saw in TV.
But hacking is not a game.
Well... maybe it's IS one after all.
I think the first game, that you can call a "Hacker-Game" was the game "Hacker" on the C64. It was delivered without a manual and the first thing you had to do: Guess the correct password to start the game. It was cool... in some way.
The genre "Hacker-Game" or "Hacking Simulation" was born.
Many years later I heard about "Uplink"...
Innovative Hacking Simulation Games for PC
Uplink
This game by Introversion is REALLY innovative. It puts you in the role of hacker sometime in the future and does its best, to give you the whole feeling about it.
Suspicious contacts via eMail, that want YOU to do a job.
Bounced connection to conceal your identity.
Lots of cracking- and decription-tools and a huge virtual internet.
It's not about hacking in the usual way. It's about hacking, how it could be in the future.
So you will click a lot and have to be fast, to not get traced.
Virus game. Play with caution:

| | Dark Signs In my eyes, this is the best simulation ever. Put away your mouse, you'll not goin' to need it. The game comes with a lot unix-like commands, telnet-like connections to servers and so on. You cannot be traced anyway... But the game gets as nearest as you can get to hacking. The story behind is somehow complex. You'll have to read ANYTHING you can get on your screen, to understand what you're doin'. But after all, you had a great hacking-experience. With IP-rangescans, portscans, a virtual website with backdoors and securityholes explained, that you gonna need to bypass the securitysystems of the servers, you have to intrude. But, sadly, Dark Signs is no longer in development. The team behind it, released the free of charge "Dark Signs Online". A hacker MMO... Graphics and the whole feeling is not the same as in the original singleplayer game. It's not even exciting... It's boring! For that reason, the original has some bugs. Some of the missions can't be accomplished, without havin' a look at walkthrough in the official forum. But it's still very good! You can also download for free (like the game itself) the mission editor and make own missions and campaigns. |
Digital Hazard
The developers behind this game tried to make a mix out of Uplink and Dark Signs. I can't say it's bad. But it's not very good. Hacking a server is done by a commandline like this: "crack 45.123.76.2" - That's it. You cracked the password. Like Uplink it's all about how fast you can do things. How fast can you type? How fast can you click? How fast can you read? - That's all. The idea behind is still very cool... But it could made better.
Blue Sky
I can't remember Blue Sky very well. All I know is, that it is pretty similar to Digital Hazard. I think it was little bit better.
Street Hacker
This game COULD be very cool, if the graphics were better. The developers tried to give all the graphics an exciting, futurism style. I think they've done too much. 3D generated pictures of eMail-contacts for example are way too much. Like Uplink, Digital Hazard and Blue Sky the game tries to be SciFi. The virtual desktop doesn't look so good, the terminalconsole however is impressive. I will have a further look at this game but will still love Dark Signs
Dark Signs is free... All other games cost between 10 and 30 USD, but free demos are available for download. I you want to feel like Kevin Mitnick, Phiber Optik, Acid Phreak or some others of the old legends, than give Dark Signs a try. It's still no simulation in the way the word should be used... But it's a lot of fun, if you like commands, telnet, ports, IP's, deleting logfiles and a good story.
If someone knows some other games (please no browserbased!), please let me know in this thread
